Would you trust the snow to do it today?Did you make SNOW ICE CREAM when you were young? Do you remember the recipe?
Sure, I would still eat it if it were in my backyard and was fresh snow. Lots of snow, vanilla, sugar and milk or cream. My son still fixes for his kids in Ohio. No snow here in my area of Texas.Did you make SNOW ICE CREAM when you were young? Do you remember the recipe?
My dad made the best snow cream ever! The trick is to use the good, fresh powder snow. In my area... yes I would do it again. I think I will have to wait until next winter though, not much good powder this time of year.
Born and raised in Florida. So... NO.
I remember my mother fixing it for us as a small child. I don't know the recipe. My sister called me the other day and told me that there was an article saying that eating snow was dangerous-the fresh stuff. Then there was another article saying that snow contained bacteria but that it was not dangerous since things in our stomach would kill it and that everything is covered in bacteria and we just live with it. I have moved to where there is no snow and I miss the walks in the park, early in the morning before anyone else got there and made tracks. I don't miss the multi-colors of snow after everyone else got there.
Snow today is dangerous!
ny sister still does -- i will have to ask her what all she puts in if!!! she made some wednesday for my great niece -- i was the one who gather the snow and no i did not get any yellow snow!!!!
Eve is right. Snow, vanilla, sugar and milk. I don't think there is any specific recipe, just ';to taste';. We made it all the time when I was a kid. When my children saw their first snow here on the Gulf Coast, we made ice cream and they were amazed. It must have been about 7AM because we knew that it would melt as soon as the sun got higher. Then the morning news came on and they said ';No, no, no, don't make snow ice cream! The pollutants, etc.'; Well, it was too late....ours was already eaten. But we didn't get sick from it and I have done it again. A little snow ice cream is the least of our ingestion of pollutants.
I would be afraid of it containing impurities, like lead, but to answer your question about recipes for it, go to ';Google,'; the search engine, and if there is still a recipe, it will show you!
Snow Ice Cream;
1 gallon snow
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups milk
When it starts to snow, place a large, clean bowl outside to collect the flakes. When full, stir in sugar and vanilla to taste, then stir in just enough milk for the desired consistency. Serve at once.
I wouldn't trust the snow in a big city, but here we have a lot less polution and I wouldn't worry about it.
yes my mom made it all the time with snow vanilla and milk and white sugar.
My mom made it when we were kids, until we were warned against, it. Also if I remember correctly, you waited until the first significant snowfall before you made snow ice cream. I believe the scare had to do with 'fallout.' Everyone was too scared to eat it then, although I imagine some still made it. I remember in the very early 60's mom would make it. I never did myself, but I still have her 'Snow Ice Cream' recipe she wrote out and gave to me many years ago. She also had her own home made chocolate syrup to top it off. My husband and I were just talking about snow ice cream this morning, but no, I don't trust it, I think I'll stick to store bought. :)
